The Devil's Castle Scramble Narrative

Alta, Utah β€’ Little Cottonwood Canyon β€’ August 19, 2026

On August 19, 2026, Zach was hiking and scrambling along the iconic Devil's Castle ridge above Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon with friends. After completing the summit traverse, the group unexpectedly strayed off the main trail during their descent into steep, unmaintained ridgeline terrain.

While attempting to navigate back toward the established trail across a loose rock ledge, Zach took an alternate climbing line. A sudden loss of footing on exposed rock resulted in a tragic 100-foot fall. Despite rapid response efforts by Salt Lake County Search & Rescue, Zach passed away doing what he loved alongside his closest friends.

Life-Saving Scrambling Lessons

Crucial Awareness
1
Class 3/4 Scrambles differ from standard trails: Ridgelines like Devil's Castle feature high exposure where a slip can be catastrophic. Hands are required for movement and rock stability must be tested prior to every hold.
2
The Golden Rule: Retrace Steps when Lost: If you drop below or deviate from the known trail, turn back and retrace your steps to the last known mark rather than attempting to forge a shortcut upward over unknown rock faces.
3
Group Consensus & Route Unity: In exposed terrain, groups must stay together and take the safest collective line rather than splitting up onto separate ledges.

Safety & Ethics

Core Principles of Trail & Ridge Safety πŸ›‘οΈ

Essential protocols for solo and group hikers to ensure safe navigation and environmental protection.

Solo & Group Communication

  • Share Your Plan: Always leave a detailed itinerary with someone at home.
  • Stay Paired: Maintain visual contact and communicate every movement on technical terrain.
  • Whistle Signal: Three short whistle blasts is the universal sign for emergency help.

Scrambling & Exposure

  • Test Every Handhold: Loose granite and scree are common in the Wasatch range.
  • Turnback Discipline: Never hesitate to turn back if terrain exceeds comfort levels.
  • Retrace Lost Routes: If you lose the trail, retrace steps to the last visible marker.

Leave No Trace (LNT)

  • Pack It Out: Carry out all trash, organic scraps, and gear remnants.
  • Stay On Trail: Prevent erosion by avoiding shortcuts on delicate switchbacks.
  • Respect Wildlife: Maintain distance from moose, deer, and mountain wildlife.
